How & Why Pilates
A few years ago I injured my knee while running. I was very active at the time, going hiking, mountain biking, weight lifting, and doing yoga. I had seen multiple doctors and specialists to try to figure out the issue with my knee.
As time went on, I was no longer able to do the things that I loved without pain. One day I gave a foam rolling workshop at a Pilates studio in California, and the owner invited me to try out a reformer class. After the first time I was totally hooked! I had finally found something that did not bother my knee and was actually a good workout! I started going to classes twice a week and did some private sessions.
Although I was able to do Pilates and not have any pain, I was still having pain doing other activities and ultimately I ended up getting microfracture knee surgery to fix the issue. Two weeks post-surgery I was still on crutches, but I was back on the reformer! It felt amazing to be able to exercise even though I couldn’t even do any weight-bearing. That’s the beauty of Pilates, even if you’re dealing with health issues or movement restrictions, there are always modifications.
